Here’s an extract from the 1991 Summer Concert Programme
SCISSETT YOUTH BAND
It is 13 years since Scissett Youth Band was formed to give the young people of the area the opportunity of playing music together locally - a chance at that time denied them. Since then there have been many changes, and options of choice are growing ever wider with the proliferation of orchestras, wind bands, string bands and, of course, the traditional local brass bands, all competing for the musicians' talents. However, it seems that the Youth Band still has its own charisma, for year after year, though older members 'graduate', younger ones are ever ready to take their places In the last two years SYB has begun to run a ‘learner group’ where inexperienced and almost-beginners are encouraged to come along on rehearsal night and work together to achieve a standard suitable to allow them to move into the main band. Several of the younger members of tonight's band are such graduates and we welcome them, and you, to our 7th Summer Concert at St Paul's, and we hope you enjoy what you hear.
1991 - NEW HOME FOR REHEARSALS
The year starts with the postponed Christmas concerts from the previous year!
The spring months see the Band taking part in the 'Areas' and the Regional Auditions of Music For Youth, but failing to qualify in either.
June Newsletter - The rent for the school for rehearsal nights is due to increase from £4.50 to £15 weekly in September. This presents a serious problem. An article in the press just a couple of months later advertises the Band's rehearsals as being in Shelley Methodist Hall, so they obviously made a move fairly promptly.
November - The Band are in the semi-finals of the Boarshurst Bands Entertainment Contest and are up against Marsden Youth Band. Unfortunately Marsden came out on top.
December - The Huddersfield and District Brass Band Association Winter Contest and SYB are awarded 2nd place.
