1985 - CAMEL IN BAND DEBUT!
28 February - SYB win the Youth Class in the 2nd WYCC Brass Band Festival in Huddersfield Town Hall.
21 April - Band again travel 'over't tops', this time to Oldham, where they play in the Youth Brass Band Entertainment Contest in aid of Action Research for the Crippled Child.
How they played I'm not sure... but they came away with a trophy - suitably aided by a camel and a belly dancer. Also adding to the attractions of the band's music were a juggler, a snake charmer, an Arabian princess and a few beggars!
A piece entitled In a Persian Market was included in the band's programme for this contest and some of the youngsters helped to bring the scene to life with the help of appropriate costumes made by parents. They were awarded the trophy for the best novelty item.
20 October - Youth In Brass, Slaithwaite SYB take 1st place!
November - Rochdale Youth Band Entertainment Contest and the band are awarded 3rd prize. Can't find any more mentions of the camel or his accomplices!
