1981 - MUCH SMARTER

February - Imperial Youth Brass Band Contest, Southport, where the band take 2nd place in the under-17 section, only 2 points behind Wardle High School. Once more they are on the front page news, this time under the heading 'Band celebrates new uniforms'. According to the paper the band had lost valuable points at the contest the year before because the judges said they were not smart enough. This year they turned up in their new uniforms and the judges remarked on how smart they were and gave them top marks for presentation!

24 April - 1st prize winners at the Horsforth Music Festival. Also awarded the Lloyds Bank Trophy for gaining the most marks in the instrumental classes.

18 October - Scissett Youth Band make it two in a row, taking 1st prize for the 2nd year running in the Youth In Brass Contest. The new trophy for deportment was awarded to... Scissett Youth Band.

'TV show for musicians' says the Chronicle in November. The Scissett Youth Junior Ensemble are taking part in Thames Television's Fanfare for Young Musicians series.
