1979 - STILL FINDING THEIR FEET

Chronicle - 18 May 1979:

It was first time lucky for members of Scissett Youth Band, at a Leeds contest last week. In their first ever contest, a brass quartet won first place, and in the youth section the band were awarded third place. Band members are aged between eleven and 14 and at Horsforth Music Festival they were under the baton of Mrs Patricia France.
Members of the winning quartet were Andrew Crosland, Patrick Letherland, Neil Morley and Richard Littlewood.

Youth In Brass Entertainment Contest - 21 October 1979

The second Youth In Brass Entertainment Contest took place in the Leisure Centre, Slaithwaite on Sunday 21st October 1979 and SYB were placed 3rd.

In the Examiner the following night Ron Massey wrote in his Contest Platform column 'Pat France must feel doubly proud of her success, for the band was formed only 12 months ago'. On Friday 26th October The Huddersfield District Chronicle had the front page headline: Success for youth band and went on to say that 'After this encouraging sign for the future, they are hoping to expand next year, and will be needing new members to keep the band on top'.
